Battlefield 4 confirmed

bf3blog

It’s been less than a month since the release of Battlefield 3, and EA is already thinking ahead: EA president Frank Gibbau has confirmed that there is going to be a Battlefield 4. Honestly, this comes as no surprise, given Battlefield 3′s tremendous success, where it sold 5 million copies during its first week.

Gibeau mentioned Battlefield 4 during a speech at the University of Southern California. EA was quick to issue a statement, saying “Frank was speaking broadly about the Battlefield brand — a brand that EA is deeply passionate about and a fan community that EA is committed to.”

There have been 17 Battlefield titles to date, and there was really no question whether we’ll see Battlefield 4 (the 18th title) or not — the question is, when and where will the Battlefield series go from here? We’re pretty sure that Bad Company 3 is in the pipelines, and possible other titles include a remake of Battlefield 2142, which was the “sequel” to Battlefield 2.

What Battlefield game would you love to see in the future?

The Future of Battlefield

What does DICE have in store for EA's flagship shooter five years from now? Here are our predictions.

Sure, we're getting a new Battlefield this year, and it looks phenomenal. DICE is making a concerted effort to take on Modern Warfare 3 while trying to retain its identity to longtime fans with the massive, well, battlefields that they've come to expect. But we're not content to look forward to this October, when Battlefield 3 is set to arrive on PC and consoles. We're looking to the future - the year of our Lord* 2016, five years from now. So what will Battlefield look like in the middle of what we expect will be a new console cycle and ridiculous new PC hardware? Here are some educated guesses.

*our Lord is inclusive, non-denominational, and is actually just a turn of phrase rather than an expression of support for any particular religion or faith. So take a deep breath. Read about video games.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - Vietnam Review

Did the best just get better?

Earlier this year, DICE released what I consider the best multiplayer shooter of 2010 with Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Somehow, while pumping out a steady stream of free content updates to Bad Company 2 proper, developing a co-operative add-on for the game, and creating the multiplayer component for Medal of Honor from scratch for EA studio mates Danger Close, DICE has found the time to deliver Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - Vietnam, and with it, what might be their best multiplayer experience this year.

Bad Company 2 - Vietnam is less downloadable content than it is a full fledged expansion to Bad Company 2. Rather than adding a few new maps and shoving it out the door, DICE has created a complementary but separate experience to Bad Company 2. Bad Company 2 - Vietnam is set apart from Bad Company 2's original multiplayer mode in the menu - it even has its own separate title screen. The expansion winds back the clock and places players in the midst of the Vietnam conflict amidst recognizable battles and period specific music. Black Ops this isn't; Bad Company 2 - Vietnam feels like it takes place more than 40 years before the main game, and there aren't any weird anachronistic pieces of future tech around to break the illusion.

Now DICE have revealed the dates for both releases. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam will be available on December 18th and VIP Map Pack 7 will be out tomorrow. Bad Company 2 Vietnam Priced

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam, EA and DICE's full-blooded expansion to one of the year's best first person shooters, has been priced.

At 15 USD, or just under 10 GBP, it weighs in at the heavier scale of pricing for downloadable content but it does promise plenty of bang for its buck. Four new maps, fifteen weapons and six vehicles are included, all wrapped up in period '60s stylings.

It certainly made an impression when we last played it at this year's Tokyo Game Show.

There's still no word of a date beyond the loose window of Winter 2010.
